2.)  The rosebush represents a lesson to the prisoners.  It tells them that they left all the good things about life behind and that the rosebush is the last beautiful thing that they will ever see.

Chapter 2 Questions

4.)  Hester's first action in the novel was her hiding her Scarlet letter behind the baby.  She was at first embarrased by the "A", but now she embraces it.  She is silent at first, but smiles so that she can overcome her punishment.
